# essence
To [[ownership|own]] [[stuff|something]] is for it to be in your [[care]].
# expansion
We believe that ownership should be transformed into stewardship
When I [[ownership|own]] something in the legal sense, it does not mean that I have a [[right]] to [[control]] every aspect of its existence (even if the legal right is granted to me). It means that the thing is in my [[care]]. I am the [[stewardship|steward]] and guardian of the thing, and I do have some rights, but I am not truly its owner in the absolute sense. In the new sense of the word that we propose here, an owner is a steward who also derives a right to benefit from the value created by the owned, as long as this benefit does not create a net cost to others (including the owned thing itself). It would be good for us to come up with an alternative vocabulary for terms such as "property" and "ownership", as there do not appear to be appropriate concepts in standard English.
This is a deep misunderstanding that we have in western culture and contributes to a great amount of [[disease]].
